The History of the Club
Chapter 6: The New Millennium
Clubhouse with new patio
The Club celebrated the dawn of the Millennium with a New
Years Eve Dance, ironically tickets cost £19.99.True to form
everyone had a great time as the club entered the
new millennium.
Lynne and Roy the new Secretary and assistant were settling
in. Membership lists were full with some applicants waiting up
to eight years, thus showing the popularity of the Club. Ideas
were sought for the person to be Captain for our Centenary
Year – four years early but sensible planning for the future. The
suggestion that a levy of £50 be added to the subscription for
spending on the swipe card was also under review.
The large TV projection screen in the Function room was a
great success for watching sporting occasions. The Club Dinner
Dance was again held at the Marriot Hotel and John Hollins
the Swansea City soccer manager at the time, and a Club
member, was the main speaker at the Men’s Annual Dinner.
Planning permission was obtained for the building of a new
Junior Locker room and Training room to be used by the
professional, for giving lessons and for the members to
practice. Local architect Hugh Portsmouth drew up the plans
and timing was now the only issue.Work eventually started in
November, working to a three-month deadline. The funding of
the project was helped by the approval of life membership,
originally suggested by treasurer Mark Batty.Twelve life
memberships at £8000 were to be made available to the under
50’s, twelve to the over 50’s at £5000. Corporate membership
was also offered at £2500 per annum.

Notably a new sound system was installed in the hope of
removing once and for all the occasional screeching and
screaming from the loud speakers - time will tell.
The Treasurer confirmed that all HP debts on machinery
purchased had been paid off. Favourable comments were made
on the state of the Course with the watering system priceless
in a drier than average summer. A small island was constructed
on the main pond, thanks to the Greens Committee, to attract
nesting birds. An illuminated water fountain was fixed in one of
the top ponds and Cyril Goldstone presented the Club with a
drinking fountain, to be sited near to the 9th green with a
plaque suitably engraved “A free drop”.
The Club Champion for 2000 was Richard Evans for the
second year running and it was a great honour for Langland to
host the Glamorgan Junior Championship, Inter-Counties Boys
and a Channel League fixture. All these showing how the
reputation of the Course as a good test of Golf had grown. The
Men’s second team gained promotion from Division 4B of the
League whilst the Links team won their League at the second
attempt. It was agreed that photographs of Jayne Evans and
Becky Last, who both represented Wales at girls, junior and
youth level, be placed in the Clubhouse. The Ladies’ team
reached the quarterfinals of the Ladies’ Welsh Championships
at Pennard for the first time in their history. Open Week and
Mixed Open Day were fully booked by the end of January.
With the Club’s Centenary in 2004 creeping up on us, there
was a need to form a sub-committee to prepare well in
