Centenary Year Diary
January
Work continued on the Function room, Lounge and Bar with the estimated finish the
second week in February. Gill and David Lewis looked to be in complete control of the
situation under the watchful eye of Hugh Portsmouth and certain members of the
Board. The redesigning of the Honours Boards was proceeding well with the new
lettering considered a vast improvement.
The booking list for the Centenary Ball looked healthy with around two hundred
members and partners putting their names down by the end of the month. The target of
four hundred should be reached without difficulty.
New trophies are to be presented to the Club by Thelma Bell, for a Mixed Foursomes
Cup (to incorporate the Douglas Bader Cup Competition), in memory of Past Captain
David Bell, and Eira Lynch for the Heathenian League, in memory of Tom Lynch. Offer by
the 2003 Ladies Captain, Anne Carney, to purchase a brass bell for the 12th hole, was
accepted by the Board with action to be taken to avoid theft.
In spite of limited accommodation due to the decorating of the Function Room, a most
successful Poems and Pints Evening was held on Monthly Drawn Night, with the Lounge
area full to the doors. The Captain led the way with a verse of some quality.
February
The main part of the refurbishment was completed on schedule by Mid-February in
time for the St.Valentine’s Buffet Dance. Needless to say the place was full. Gill and
David Lewis were to be complimented on the high standard of work and effort put in to
revitalise the three rooms involved and taking us into the Centenary Year with a
Clubhouse for members to be proud of and visitors impressed by.
The Trophy and other boards were completed before the AGM with the new lettering
to most members satisfaction. Credit to Phil Mayhew, chairman of the House
Committee, for his efforts.Work continued to repair various parts of the flat roofs, this
necessary to avoid any water ingress following the decoration of the main rooms. The
sound system was completely replaced with new speakers to blend in with the décor.
On the social side both the St.Valentines Buffet Dance and the Horse Racing night went
very well with good numbers attending.
The Board decided to reduce the quota for full playing men from 575 to 570, this in
view of the fact that those not renewing membership were either deceased or probably
played rarely, if at all, whereas new members would play more often.
The golfing celebrations for the year started with a St. David’s Day mixed golf
competition held on the last Sunday of February with a meal afterwards that was hugely
successful in attendance and well supported by the weather gods.
March
A special floodlit golf competition was organised for the middle Friday of the month
with holes 1-5 and 17-18 to be floodlit. The competition was over subscribed but
unfortunately torrential rain during the week prior resulted in the need for the
competition to be cancelled due to potential damage to the course by the floodlight
pylons.
A past captains and past Ladies captains competition was held in celebration of the
centenary followed by a dinner afterwards where partners joined the competitors. A
great time was had by all.
