April
The Captain’s Drive In attracted a good crowd of members to spectate and later to play.
The Captain and Ladies Vice-Captain were impeccably dressed in 1904 attire and both
managed solid shots to the first green. The Ladies section were out in numbers
supporting the Captain with the majority in dress from the early days of golf. Several
brave men were also suitably dressed in attire plucked from the back of their wardrobes.
Competitions began in earnest during the month with victories for Neil Hogg in the Club
Championship Qualifier, Max Broadfield in the Welsh Team Stableford, M. Morgan and K.
Ruddock for the Lifeboat Spoons, Geof Ellis and Jim Manson victorious in the Harold
Wood Cup and M. Morgan and J. Davies likewise in the Founders Cup.
May
The April Monthly Draw was in fact made on May 1st, this so that we could have a May
Ball, and what a success it was, with well over a hundred members attending in evening
dress, enjoying a buffet and dancing to music by Casual Affair.
Chris Smart, writing in the Swansea Evening Post, produced an excellent article on the
Langland Bay Centenary Year under the heading of “Bay ready to have a ball” and with a
photograph of the Captain Hugh Evans and the Ladies Captain Hazel Harris taken with
the Clubhouse as a backdrop.
Meetings of the Centenary Ball Committee confirmed that arrangements were well in
hand with seating for the event in the Brangwyn Hall limited to 440, plus the top
table. The Band of the Coldstream Guards to provide the music. Likewise plans for the
visitors from Kinsale were detailed by John Pickard with confirmation awaited for
entertainmnt provisionally booked for the various functions.
Brian Owen was a worthy winner of the Presidents Putter played over the Bank Holiday
week-end and the Grieg Simpson Cup was won by the President, Brian Nimmo, and his
partner of some standing,Viv Peters, both of course Past Captains. The first of the
Centenary Triangular Matches was played at Machynlleth with the home club as hosts to
Haverfordwest and Langland Bay. It proved to be an excellent day for all those who
made the trip with both good weather and hospitality. The Veterans Section Open Day,
especially arranged for Centenary Year celebrations, held early in the month, was most
successful with monetary donations made to both the Club and the Junior Section.
June
The impressive slate stone presented by Past Captain John Morse was installed on the
entry to the Club, near the putting green, it was well received from both members and
visitors alike.
June Open Week was once again a success with the weather holding out and allowing
players to enjoy the course without getting wet. Compliments were paid to the course
and to the efforts put in by Jim Jenkins and his greens staff. In fact the performance of all
our staff was a credit to the Club. It should be mentioned that the majority of the
winners were from Langland Bay.
Earlier in the month a representative team of eight from the Glamorgan County Golf
Union and a Welsh Golfing Union International Team of eight, played a Langland Select
Team in atrocious weather conditions. The quality of golf was not affected by the
conditions and the evening, in the presence of high ranking officials, was enjoyed by all.
In the Clubhouse the new Trophy cabinet was installed in the Bar and a new notice board
placed in the main entrance both due to the efforts of the House Chairman Phil Mayhew.
Captains Day was unfortunately wet and the competition postponed until later, however
the evenings entertainment more than made up for the earlier disappointment. The “Four
Ball” comedians were true to their title, the food good and the dancing went on and
on.The number of members attending was a compliment to the Captain and his wife.
Sundays weather was much better and the competition entrants produced some good
scoring and the evening buffet provided by the captain was a huge success.
