July
The first Major competition for this month was the Langland Bowl and this was won by
Jim Manson with Richard Evans victorious in the Scratch Cup.The Millennium Trophy
was played for at Langland for the first time since its inauguration in 2000, this for
obvious reasons. The winners were Gower Golf Club.
The second round of the Centenary Triangular Matches took place at Haverfordwest in
very good weather and the third and final round will take place at Langland in
September. During the month the Vets Cup was won by that young veteran Lindsey
Donald and at the end of July the postponed Captain’s Prize was won by Chris Edwards.

Professional 1958-1997
The Monthly Draw night was devoted to gamblers with the Function Room turned into
a Casino. The House Chairman was in complete control and the number of members
attending suspiciously high. The Starters Hut dedicated to Tom Lynch was completed in
time for the Centenary Week competitions and looked imposing overlooking the first
tee. Thanks here to members Ian and Andrew Williams and Robert “Archie” Thomas for
their unstinting efforts in ensuring the deadlines were met.
August
The first week in the month meant only one thing, Centenary Celebrations. The early part of
the week was devoted to domestic competitions with the winner of the Centenary Trophy
Medal, John Mathews. This competition will now become an annual event on the calendar. The
Centenary Stableford was won by K. Lee Thomas and the Ladies team event by Barbara
Calder, Patsy Cope and Wendy Williams.
On Wednesday the visitors from Kinsale Golf Club arrived by air, sea and road and were
welcomed to the Club by the Captain, and members, with a Buffet. Golf on both Thursday and
Friday was in a “Ryder Cup” and “Solheim Cup” type formula with Men and Ladies teams.
Langland Bay were victorious in the former and the latter halved, but the overall winner was
the spirit in which the games were played.
Thursday’s Barbeque Buffet and Dance was attended by almost two hundred members and
guests, who gathered both inside and outside the Clubhouse on a balmy summer’s evening.
Friday evening’s entertainment commenced with the Gwalia Male Voice Choir and they
included a piece of music specially written for the occasion by one of our members Vernon
Bowen. Needless to say it was much appreciated by all present as was the Buffet and the
presentation of prizes to the winning teams and individuals. In addition all those at the club
and one may add, the surrounding area, enjoyed an excellent display of fireworks, followed by
a live band and dancing late into the early hours with our friends from Kinsale.

Saturday was the big day with the Centenary Ball and Banquet at the Brangwyn Hall attended
by four hundred and fifty members and guests. The Captain welcomed to the Banquet, the
High Sheriff and his wife and the Lord Mayor of Swansea and her Consort, and this was
followed by dancing to the Band of the Coldstream Guards. What a night to remember!
John Pickard, the Ladies Captain Hazel Harris, our Secretary Lynne Coleman, her assistant Roy
Phillips and members of the Centenary Week Sub-Committee, must be complimented on the
planning and organisation which made the week as a whole a resounding success. Even the
weather played its part with bright sunshine most of the time. Last but not least was the high
standard of service provided by the Steward, Peter and his staff and the excellence of the
numerous buffets provided by the Stewardess Anne and her staff. Hugh Evans, the Captain, had
much to be proud of for an exceptional week but there was more to come.
Captain’s Charity Day, sponsored again by “Pic-up Spares”, was another notch in the belt for
Hugh with competitors from far and wide participating for a good cause. The actual amount
raised for the chosen charity to be announced later. A special mention here to Pic Up Spares,
who have supported the Charity Day for many years and really pulled out all the stops for
this year.
