September
Most of the Major Club Competitions were completed during the month with some wellfought out matches. On the Men’s side the Gold Cup saw a victory for James Stein who
beat Tim Padfield after extra holes and Austin Roberts and Stuart Davies were victorious
over Geof Ellis and Chris Evans in the Summer Fourball Final. The Men’s Monthly Medal
Champion, with the four best scores out of five rounds played, was William McFadzean.
The Ladies Caroline John Bowl was won by Sarah John who defeated Tracey Crawshaw, this
completed a hat trick for Sarah who also won in 2002 and 2003.The Farr Cup Final
resulted in a win for Gill Lennox over Emma Thomas and the partnership of Hugh and
Sarah John overcame Mike and Kate Turner in the Peel Cup.
The Centenary Pro-Am Tournament was most successful with twenty nine teams taking
part. The winning professional was Andrew Sherborne from the Kendleshire Club with a 65
followed in second place by John Peters of St. Mary’s with a 67. Our own Professional Mark
Evans produced an excellent round of 69 in fourth place. The best team of the day was
from Glyn Abbey Golf Club.
Gold Cup Final, 5th September
Bernard Evans (ex Captain) with son
Hugh Evans (Centenary Captain) and son
Alex Evans (Centenary Junior Captain)
Following a highly successful 2003, the Men’s First Team did not perform as well in 2004,
with the extra travelling to unfamiliar courses taking its toll. The Team is determined to
regain promotion in 2005. Our Second Team was involved in a very competitive division and
despite a number of close matches were relegated. The respective Team Leaders Austin
Roberts and Simon Hughes under Team Manager Brian Nimmo should be complimented
for their efforts. The Centenary Triangular Match between Haverfordwest, Langland Bay and
Machynlleth reached the final stages at Langland on a reasonable day weatherwise. Both the
Men’s and Ladies teams battled it out with the overall winners from the three matches,
Langland Bay. Congratulations to the winning team, to the individual winner, our Chairman
Tony Vaughan and to Phil Mayhew for his organisational skills. The dinner and presentation
ceremony completed a worthy event for all those who participated.Talk of an occasional
competition in future years, on similar lines, was sincere and will be discussed next year.
The Stones Section under the Captaincy of John Davies experienced an enjoyable year with
twenty-eight members taking part in eight matches played. Unfortunately the results didn't
go our way and the team was relegated to Division 3.The highlight of the season was the
Annual Dinner Dance with well over a hundred attending. We wish this section well for
next season under the new Captain Clive Henson.
Peter Fender Team Captain of the Quartz Section managed to blend youth with experience
and produce excellent results. The team went from strength to strength and proudly won
Division 3 and promotion in our Centenary year.
Our Junior Section had a good year with Rhydian Hughes, Alex Evans, Richard Yates,
Andrew Lewis, Phillip Bond and John Matthews winning Monthly Medals. The Captain’s Prize
was a victory for Andrew Lewis, the Ladies Captain’s Prize went to John Matthews, the
Daily Telegraph Qualifying Round winner was Phillip Bond, and he also won the Junior Club
Championship. The Junior team finished a commendable second in the Summer League but
the highlight of the year was the hard work put in by all the Juniors, under the Captaincy of
Alex Evans, to reduce their handicaps with several down to single figures. Carroll Davies the
Junior Leader for 2004 should be congratulated.
October
The Men’s Club Finals were completed early in the month after several delays.
Richard Evans taking the Club Championship crown at the thirty eighth hole after a to
and fro battle with Lee Thomas. Mostyn Lewis became the holder of the Ken Phillips Cup
with the beaten finalist Kevin Norris.
In 1999 the late Dave Bell, Captain that year, his wife Thelma and Margaret Algar, launched
the first mixed foursomes on a Sunday afternoon. It was “social golf” with 14 holes played
followed by tea in the Clubhouse. What started in a relatively small way has grown to
such an extent that during the season five or six events take place with sixty or seventy
members taking part. This is followed by a full meal rather than tea and a prize giving.
Long may it continue.
Rhiannon Evans
The Ladies Golfer of the Year was without doubt Rhiannon Evans, she also won the
Stevens Cup and with Wendy Yates won the Gwen Phillips Cup. Other Lady winners
