during the Centenary year were Deborah Howard who won both the Bunnies Cup and
Captain’s Prize,Angela Edwards successful in the Mills Cup and Rosemary Jones in the
T.A. Evans Cup.The Ladies First Team, under the Captaincy of Tracey Crawshaw,
experienced their only defeat in the last match of the season, away at The Vale of
Glamorgan.Their second place finish in Division 4 West was commendable.
It is worth recording that Mary O’Nions has represented the Club at first team level for
more than thirty-five years, most of them in number one spot. The Ladies Second Team
did well to stay in the same division for next year with a mixture of experienced and
young members. One such young member, Sarah Matthews, was awarded the Mary
O’Nions Trophy as the most improved player of the year. The year culminated in a
celebratory Ladies Dinner when all were presented with a Centenary Pen.

The Veterans Section (now renamed the Seniors) had a busy and eventful year under the
Captaincy of Ted Partington. As reported earlier the Open Day held in May was a roaring
success with players from twenty-four different Clubs taking part. The full quota of team
matches was played during the season with all ending in “honourable halves”. Rowley
Jenkins won the Dudley Schofield Cup and Mike Reeder the William Burrows Shield.
It was sad to hear, in our Centenary Year, that one of the most well known and wellrespected members had played his final hole with the death of Colin Campbell. This past
Captain and Club Secretary will be sorely missed but his achievements at the Club always
remembered.
Presentation night at the end of the month was organised and compered with aplomb by
Mark Portsmouth. The large number of competition winners, who attended to accept
they’re various trophies and prizes from their Captain Hugh Evans, made a fitting end to
the golfing season.Yet from another direction came some news to please us all but more
of this in November.

Early in the month confirmation was received that HRH The Duke of York, KCVO, ADC
would be visiting the Club on Friday 19th as part of our Centenary celebrations. A SubCommittee had already been formed to plan the visit and ensure that the day went
smoothly. The visit had been under consideration for several weeks but for security
reasons the Club had been instructed to keep the visit low profile. When the day arrived
with wall to wall sunshine the visit turned out to be memorable in every way. Prince
Andrew spent over an hour during lunchtime chatting in a relaxed way to invited guests
and dining at the Captain’s Table. The Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff and other invited
guests including the Lord Mayor of Swansea and her Consort accompanied him.
Following lunch His Royal Highness was granted Honorary Life Membership of the Club
by the Captain and presented with a scroll in recognition of the award and a Club tie.
He in turn unveiled a framed photograph of himself , with a suitable plaque, to be hung
in the Clubhouse. During the visit the Royal Standard was raised and it must be said that
the seventy invited members and guests, clubhouse staff and waitresses will remember
the day well.Whilst not wishing to single out those involved in the arrangements for the
visit, mention must be made of the important part played by John Pickard and our
Secretary Lynne Coleman on a day that went without a hitch.

A special mention should be made of the floral displays, outside and inside the
Clubhouse, for both the HRH visit and throughout the Centenary year. Plaudits to
Margaret and Brian Algar and Rosemary Beer.
The final social occasion for the year was the Captain’s Farewell Buffet Dance with
about one hundred and twenty members and guests squeezing into the Function Room
and Lounge to say a fond adieu to Hugh and Mary. During the evening the Captain
reported that his Charity events had raised the sum of £9,500 and that equal amounts
would be given to Welsh Air Ambulance and to Childline Cwmru. This and the number
attending his last function made a fitting tribute to end what had been a truly
momentous year.
